Teaching at a distance with CAL

Pages 25-30 | Published online: 07 Jul 2006

Abstract

Canada, by virtue of its size, relatively low population and proximity to the United States, presents particular challenges for the development of open learning. This paper examines the potential offered by the use of computer‐assisted learning (CAL) as part of a high quality open learning system. A case study is presented of one institution, North Island College in British Columbia, which has been enabled by this means to serve large numbers of students who would otherwise not have had access to post‐secondary education. Of the four authors, Don Cowper is from North Island College, Roger Hart from Consortel and David Godfrey and Sharon Sterling from Softwords.
