Abstract
The development of open learning programmes for professional groups can provide the stimulus for a re‐examination of the assumptions and educational practices of the groups concerned. This paper describes one such case, the Certificate in Health Education Open Learning Project, which was based in the Department of Education at the University of Keele, funded by the Health Education Council, and given a brief to develop, implement and evaluate a national open learning course. Gaye Heathcote was the Project Co‐ordinator, and is now Head of Sociology at Crewe and Alsager College of Higher Education.
