In this second article (the first having appeared in the June issue), Magnus John of the International Centre of Distance Learning, based at the Open University UK, addresses the implications for distance education in the African continent of orality and the use of foreign or second languages in the educational environments. Reviewing media, support services, and teaching and learning styles, John concludes that the initiatives taken by inter‐governmental agencies provide the best way forward.
