Abstract
As long ago as 1967 Kenya Railways decided to embark on a long term project to design and implement a computer‐based system for control of its stock of some 10,000 goods wagons. Large financial savings were expected to result from the increased operational efficiency that would be achieved. The first phase of the project, providing a continuous full record of the location, movement and state (e.g. full or empty, details of load, operational or under maintenance) has been in operation since 1971. The paper describes the system, indicates the resources that were needed for its construction and implementation and notes briefly the future developments that are planned.
