Abstract
A formal approach to information systems development is outlined by a description of a structured systems development methodology. The various stages of the methodology are then reviewed in the light of experiences gained in three consultancy projects in developing countries.
Due to the various local conditions and human factors liable to adversely affect an Information Technology system in less developed countries, user understanding and assent must be emphasized during system development. Furthermore, long‐term planning and awareness of the local social, political and environmental factors will prove vital to the continued successful operation of the system.
