From Coal Mines to Culture – Utilising Economic Regeneration to Maximise Economic Inclusion

Pages 195-200 | Published online: 16 Dec 2010

Abstract

Gateshead Council has, in the last 10 years, perfected a mechanism for ensuring that social economic inclusion is at the core of capital regeneration schemes. The development of Gateshead Quays has led to the introduction of a targeted training and recruitment programme that has been refined and adapted to suit the needs of employers and represent the opening up of employment opportunities for local unwaged and unemployed people. This programme has been utilised to create real jobs for local people.
