Field Philosophy and Its Institutions in the East and West

ABSTRACT

A growing set of Chinese scholars view field philosophy as a new approach toward philosophical research. Field philosophy offers a meta-philosophy, and a methodology, but most importantly an institutional response to philosophical relevance. As the latter, field philosophy means implementing a philosophical practice at the organizational level. This is the essential characteristic of field philosophy that distinguishes itself from all other philosophies and philosophical practices. China does not have a tradition of field philosophy, but should embrace this approach as consistent with its Marxist orientation, while recognizing that the institutionalization of field philosophy will occur differently in the West and China.
