SPHYNCTOLETHUS HANNA, AILURETTA GEN.NOV., AND EVOLUTIONARY TRENDS WITHIN THE HEMIAULOIDEAE

Pages 241-269 | Published online: 31 Oct 2011

Abstract

Four new biddulphioid species from the middle Eocene of the Falklands Plateau are described. Two species are assigned to the new genus Ailuretta and two to the genus Sphynctolethus Hanna. Hemiaulus vesicarius Strel'nikova and H. pacificus (Hajos) Gombos are transferred to Sphynctolethus, providing a link from the Cretaceous to the Oligocene. Pseudaulacodiscus jousae Vekschina is described and illustrated and the relationships of the above genera with Cerataulina, Eucampia and Hemiaulus discussed. Evolutionary trends within this group, belonging to the sub-family Hemiauloideae, are suggested.
