Abstract

A new heterovalvate species, Stephanodiscus galileensis, is described from Holocene subsurface sediments of Lake Kinneret, Israel. Differences were found between the concave and convex valves with respect to the positions of the fultoportulae on the valve face, the arrangement of the pores on the valve mantle, and the presence of a hyaline region running around the valve at the junction of valve face and mantle. Under the light microscope this taxon resembles both Stephanodiscus aegyptiacus Ehrenb. and S.rotula (Kütz.) Hendey.
