A NEW SPECIES OF THALASSIOSIRA, T. CARDIOPHORA

Abstract

A new species belonging to the large, mainly marine genus Thalassiosira is described from material collected off Queensland, Australia. It is characterized by an unusual bend in the ring of fultoportulae, the winged exit tubes of the fultoportulae, and the cylindrical form of the cells. The new species is named T. cardiophora and its structure is compared with that of other Thalassiosira species.
