THE PROBLEM OF DISTINGUISHING THE NEWLY DESCRIBED DIATOM GENUS PSEUDOSTEPHANODISCUS

Pages 15-23 | Published online: 31 Oct 2011

Abstract

The special morphological features of the newly described centric diatom genus Pseudostephanod-iscus Sieminska are discussed on the basis of investigations on both Stephanodiscus minutulus (Kütz.) Cleve & Molier (syn. S. perforatus Genkal & Kuzmin) and the original material of S. hantzschii Grun. The morphological features described as typical for the new genus can be found in several Stephanodiscus species, and are merely teratological features within the genus Stephanodiscus rather than the basis for a new genus.
