Abstract
A new species belonging to the genus Thalassiosira is described from material collected from the Vaal River, South Africa. It is characterized by having central fultoportulae that are arranged in one or two groups with 1–4 processes in each, and a fasciculated pattern of areolae on the valve face. The structure of this species, T. duostra, is compared with that of three other Thalassiosira species: T. hasleae Cassie & Dempsey, T. fauni (Gasse) Hasle and T. rudolfii (Bachmann), Hasle.
