ANORTHONEIS DULCIS SP. NOV., A NEW FRESHWATER DIATOM FROM NORTHERN FLORIDA, U.S.A.

Pages 267-280 | Published online: 31 Oct 2011

Abstract

Anorthoneis dulcis sp. nov. is described from the Withlacoochee, Suwannee, and Santa Fe Rivers in northern Florida, U.S.A. This small diatom is characterized by coarse, radiate striae (19–21 in 10 μm) on both valves, an eccentric raphe and large central nodule on one valve and an eccentric axial area on the sibling valve. The central area (present on both valves) is unilaterally expanded on each valve into an irregular to acute-angled sub-fascia. This is the first valid report of a freshwater species in the genus Anorthoneis. The morphology of A. dulcis is compared with that of other taxa in the genus, particularly A. vortex Sterrenburg.
