Abstract
The fine structure of the frustules of the rarely recorded planktic freshwater diatom Aulacoseira herzogii (Lemmermann) Simonsen was studied in detail using material from River Solimōes (Brazil) and Lake Drummond (USA). A. herzogii is characterized by long separating spines and lack of interlocking spines. Other features are in agreement with Aulacoseira sensu stricto.
