OBSERVATIONS ON THE VARIABILITY OF THE NUMBER OF PARTECTA IN FIVE SPECIES OF MASTOGLOIA

Abstract

In Mastogloia smithii, M. lanceolata, M. robusta, and M. erythraea, there is a positive correlation between the number of partecta of the valvocopula and the frustule length; by contrast, in M. decussata there is no significant correlation. In most specimens belonging to species with large numbers of partecta there are up to 5 more partecta on one side of the apical axis than on the other. In all of the species there is no correlation between the number of partecta and the frustule width. In M. erythraea there is no significant correlation between the total number of large partecta and the frustule length; many configurations of the partectal ring are possible, ranging from a total lack of large partecta to the presence of 4 groups of 4 large partecta each. This leads us to question the validity of M. erythraea var. anocellata as a separate variety.
