Abstract

A population of Chaetoceros wighamii from a lake in the province of Malaga (Spain) has been studied. The cells occur singly or in short chains of 2 to 4 cells. Resting spores with spiny convex primary valves and truncate-conical secondary valves also occur. The structure of the valves and especially the fine structure of the setae which have helicoidal filaments is disussed.

The synonomy of the taxa which have been associated with C. wighamii/C. amonita is discussed. Two species, C. wighamii Brightwell and C. bottnicus Cleve are recognized, the former occurring in inland waters and the latter probably only in marine situations.
