NOTE

A NEW SPECIES OF PROTOKEELIA

Pages 203-207 | Published online: 31 Oct 2011

Abstract

Unusual shaped, brown pigmented cells were noted in a sample of intertidal marine sediment from Bahrain. Placed in a culture medium they multiplied rapidly and under the light microscope appeared semi-circular (paired?), or slightly indented semi-circles. Growth was rapid but the cells were not obviously diatoms. Cleaning however revealed that they were indeed diatoms, belonging to Protokeelia—Reimer & Lee.
