Abstract

Analysis of net and bottle samples from the southern Gulf of Mexico allowed documentation of the morphological variation exhibited by 201 chains of the planktonic diatom Chaetoceros diversus Cleve. Considerable variation existed in the length (i.e. number of cells) and curvature of chains, dimensions of individual cells, and orientation and morphology of terminal and intercalary setae. Different morphological states for the thickened intercalary setae are presented here for the first time. This variability allowed the recognition of five clearly defined morphotypes. It is concluded that the taxon C. laevis Leuduger-Fortmorel is merely one of the morphotypes observed in this study and, therefore, should be considered as a later synonym of C. diversus.
