Abstract
In attempts to further describe the diatom flora of the Lake Itasca (Minnesota, U.S.A.) State Park region (Edlund 1994, Czarnecki 1995) and during recent curation of additional strains for the Loras College Freshwater Diatom Culture Collection (Czarnecki 1987), five taxa oíAchnanthes Bory sensu lato have been encountered which we believe should be assigned to Achnanthidium Kiitzing sensu Round et al. (1990). Although recognition of Achnanthidium as an acceptable genus has been severely criticized in some recent comprehensive taxonomie treatments (Krammer & Lange-Bertalot 1991, Lange-Bertalot 1993), we agree with Round el al. (1990) that its proposed status as a valid genus is warranted. The combinations which follow are the result of this viewpoint, which we have expressed elsewhere (Czarnecki 1994a, b, Edlund 1994). Rationale for authorship is included for each taxon.
