Abstract
Navicula krasskei Hustedt has been considered to belong to the group of diatoms including Fallacia festiva (Krasske) Mann & Stickle and F. monoculata (Hustedt) Mann & Stickle. Examination of N. krasskei in the SEM revealed that this taxon does not, in fact, share features with either Fallacia or Navicula sensu stricto. Navicula krasskei differs in possessing a distinct longitudinal line visible in the light microscope. Further, in N. krasskei, the striae do not cross this line as they do in Fallacia. Also differing from Fallacia, Navicula krasskei lacks a conopeum. Finally, a series of external costae are present in the area between the heavily silicified margin of the valve and the heavily silicified axial area. Because of these unique features, we propose the formation of a new genus in the Naviculaceae for N. krasskei, Microcostatus gen. nov.
