THE EARLY HISTORY OF THE BIDDULPHIALES II. THE GENUS EUODIELLA P. A. SIMS GEN. NOV.

Pages 383-407 | Published online: 31 Oct 2011

Abstract

The genus Euodiella is described as new with species ranging from the late Cretaceous to the Miocene. Euodiella species are mostly semi-circular to lunate and the genus is distinguished by the elaborate external opening of its rimoportula(e) positioned between the hyaline “central” area and the dorsal margin also on the position of the pseudocelli present at the poles on the ventral mantle and, sometimes the summit of the elevations. Euodiella belongs to the Biddulphiaceae having poroid areolae occluded by cribra, interastrial pores, a marginal ridge and pseudocelli.

Triceratium bicornigerum Hanna(? syn. T. lunatum Long, Fuge & Smith), T. perplexum Long, Fuge & Smith, Trinacria tristictia Hanna (syn. Lithodesmium margaritaceum Long, Fuge & Smith) and Euodia semicircularis (Brightwell) Hust. in A. Schm. are transferred to Euodiella and four new species, Euodiella cretacea, E. biddulphioides, E. hendeyi and E. eocenica are described.

The discussion includes a survey of, and comparisons with, other members of the Biddulphiales with a semi-circular to cresentic outline, Eunotogramma Weisse, Leudugeria Tempère ex Van Heurck and Alveoflexus Hendey & Sims.
