OESTRUPIA GRANDIS SP. NOV., A NEW BENTHIC MARINE DIATOM FROM THE BAHAMAS

Abstract

A new diatom species, Oestrupia grandis Hein & Winsborough, is described from benthic saline habitats on Norman's Pond Cay (Exuma Islands) in the Bahamas. The ends of this lanceolate diatom are cuneate to slightly rostrate. The axial area widens asymmetrically into a unilaterally inflated central area. Alveolate striae are almost parallel at the centre of the valve but become radiate toward the apices. Each stria, except those close to the apices, consists of two alveoli, with the inner alveolus longer than the outer one. Each alveolus opens externally via three transapical rows of poroids.
