Pages 41-48 | Published online: 31 Oct 2011

Abstract

This paper is part of a Ph.D. thesis at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul

A new centric diatom, Paralia elliptica Garcia, is described from marine surface sand collected in Zimbros Bay, Araçá, Penha, Praia Brava and Taquarinhas (Santa Catarina State, Brazil), where it lives as an epipsammic species. The taxon is characterized by its elliptical outline, convex valve, gently undulate valve face with parallel ridges and grooves, heterovalvy and a ring of rimoportulae oriented obliquely to the striae. The morphology and ultrastructure of valves and frustules are described by light microscopy (LM) and scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations.
