INFERRING SEA LEVEL VARIATION FROM RELATIVE PERCENTAGES OF PSEUDOPODOSIRA KOSUGII IN ROCHA LAGOON, SE URUGUAY

Abstract

The paper presents data on the relationship between diatom microfossils, sediment type and the Holocene sea level variation in Uruguay. Changes in species composition of the diatom flora allowed us to infer past salinity trends. In the sediment core studied, high relative percentages of Pseudopodosira kosugii during late Holocene were observed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second reported record of this species. Our data on sea level changes, sediment type and relative percentages of P. kosugii are in close agreement with Tanimura & Sato (1997), who first described this species as a reliable indicator of Holocene sea level variation for coastal Japan.
