Abstract
In the interest of understanding the role of silica in the diatom cell it is necessary to respond to some of the comments made by Dr Schmid in Diatom Research (2003), Volume 18, 191–195. I feel that in her reply to what I have written she has taken, perhaps unintentionally, some of my comments out of context and in doing so has changed the meaning of my sentences and paragraphs. Also in one instance she has misunderstood the meaning of the sentence. I follow the same References to portions of my paper as did Dr Schmid.
