Abstract
Eunotia ariengae, an epilithic diatom from an acidic spring in Barcarena County, northern Brazil, was described. This taxon forms branched chains united at the poles and attaches to substrates by mucilage pads. It is morphologically similar to tropical species E. dacostae Metzeltin & Lange-Bertalot, but it can be clearly differentiated by the raphe position on the valve face and by greater striae and areola density. Detailed valve ultrastructure of E. ariengae were documented with SEM.
