Abstract
Gomphonema intermedium was described by Hustedt in 1942. It is a species with striae composed of double rows of areolae and Hustedt discussed the significance of this character at length. Detailed studies on populations similar to G. intermedium showed that there exist different taxa with biseriate or partly biseriate areolae. In this paper three new species are described, two from South-East Asia (G. pseudointermedium, G. subbulbosum) and one from South America (G. lujanense). In addition the results of LM and SEM investigations of G. intermedium in the type-material are presented.
