A NEW TAXON OF THE SECTION NITZSCHIAE LANCEOLATAE GRUNOW: NITZSCHIA COSTEI SP. NOV. COMPARED TO N. FONTICOLA GRUNOW, N. MACEDONICA HUSTEDT, N. TROPICA HUSTEDT AND RELATED SPECIES

Abstract

Since the end of the nineties, many periphyton inventories dealing with water quality assessment and biomonitoring of the French hydrographic network have revealed the occurrence of populations of an unknown Nitzschia belonging to the section Lanceolatae. In the present study, the recognition of a new species was determined and demonstrated the taxonomical features, which separated it from the morphologically similar species of Nitzschia (Lanceolatae). This study is based on light and scanning electron microscopy observations of Nitzschia costei sp. nov., N. fonticola, and the type material of N. tropica and N. macedonica and supplemented with bibliographical data of N. bulnheimiana, N. fossilis and N. frustulum. Furthermore, long-term monitoring of surface water chemistry along with diatom sampling carried out by the French Water Agencies provided a huge database allowing for a detailed analysis and drawing out of the ecological preferenda of N. costei sp. nov. They are synthesised as follows: epilithic taxon, rheophilous, alkaliphilous, occurring strictly in freshwater bodies, oxygen requirements fairly high, beta-mesosaprobous and eutraphentic.

Depuis la fin des années quatre-vingt-dix, de nombreux inventaires du périphyton réalisés dans le cadre de l'évaluation et du suivi de la qualité des eaux du réseau hydrographique français ont révélé la présence de populations d'une espèce de Nitzschia inconnue appartenant à la section des Lanceolatae. Nos résultats ont conduit à la reconnaissance d'une nouvelle espèce, Nitzschia costei sp. nov., et ont mis en avant l'existence de caractéristiques taxonomiques permettant de la séparer d'autres espèces bien connues du genre Nitzschia section Lanceolatae. Cette étude s'est appuyée sur les observations en microscopie optique et èlectronique à balayage de Nitzschia costei sp. nov., N. fonticola, du matériel type de N. macedonica et N. tropica ainsi que des données bibliographiques de trois autres Nitzschia morphologiquement proches: N. bulnheimiana, N. frustulum et N. fossilis. En parallèle, les séries temporelles des suivis chimiques des eaux de surface couplées aux prélèvements de diatomées réalisés par les Agences de l'Eau françaises constituent une importante base de données permettant l'analyse et la mise en évidence des caractéristiques écologiques de cette espèce. Les préférences écologiques de Nitzschia costei sp. nov. peuvent être résumées comme suit: taxon épilithique, rhéophile, alcaliphile, strictement électif des eaux douces assez fortement oxygénées, bêta-mésosaprobe et eutrophe.
