Abstract

Desikaneis gessneri was found in both planktonic and periphytic samples from the Guaraguacu and Maciel Rivers, also in the Paranaguá Bay, Paraná State, and from sediment samples taken from Murutucu Island, Pará State, Brazil. Prasad and Livingston (1993) described the genus Desikaneis based on Fragilaria gessneri Hustedt. However, identical material had previously been described as Plagiogramma simplex Frenguelli. Upon analysis of the Frenguelli type material, similarities were found with the Brazilian specimens containing elliptical-rhomboidal to rhomboidal-lanceolate valves. Therefore, this paper proposes the synonymization of Plagiogramma simplex with Desikaneis gessneri, in agreement with the rules of the Code for Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN).
