Morphology and distribution of the diatom Hyaloneis hyalinum and a description of Pravifusus brasiliensis sp. nov.

Pages 5-11 | Received 11 Sep 2009, Accepted 20 Aug 2010, Published online: 30 Jun 2011

Abstract

Two hyaline diatoms found in marine sandy beaches are studied from the Brazilian coast. The study reports Hyaloneis hyalinum with a fine valve structure, morphology and dimensions in agreement with its original diagnosis. New morphological data on the genus Pravifusus are presented with a description of a new species, Pravifusus brasiliensis. The diagnostic features of this new species are the cingulum composed of thin open bands, the chain formation and the spines visible in light microscopy, and the apical pore field organized in rows of few poroids and bifurcated spines in scanning electron microscopy.
