Abstract

Three new diatom species in the family Cymbellaceae, Encyonema mirabilis, Cymbella olgae and Cymbella cognata were described from the littoral zone of Lake Baikal, Russia. Small size, dense striae and deep areolae differentiate these taxa from closely related species. Areolae in C.cognata have a undulate, double-pore and horseshoe-like shape.

Acknowledgements

The Darwin Initiative (DEFR, UK) made this work on benthic diatoms in Lake Baikal possible. The authors express their deep gratitude to R. Flower, a coordinator of this project. Numerous people helped with the field work. Ye.V. Likhoshway helped set-up and regulate the collection and A.E. Kuzmina prepared and recorded many samples. We would like to thank British scientists who took part in the field work to sample diatoms for the collections and R. Crawford for his valuable comments on the manuscript and for improvement of the English.
