Pages 371-372 | Published online: 05 Jul 2011

Notes

1. Thomas W. Hanchett (1996) US tax policy and the shopping center boom of the 1950s and 1960s, The American Historical Review, 101(4): 1082–1110.

2. On page 29, Roland Park, MD, USA is cited as the first planned suburban community (1890–1920), the second phase of which was designed bylandscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. However the first planned suburb is arguably Llewellyn Park, NJ, USA, designed in 1852/53 by architect Alexander Jackson Davis. Roland Park was not even Olmsted's first designed suburb; that honour goes to Riverside, IL, USA, designed in 1868.
