The transcription of phonation types

Pages 253-256 | Received 06 Jan 1988, Accepted 01 Feb 1988, Published online: 14 Sep 2009

Abstract

The problem of transcribing both normal and disordered phonation types into phonetic symbols is discussed. Phonation is described using the parameters of stricture type and stricture location, and the need for diacritics to cover these features is described. A set of such diacritics is proposed and illustrated, and the problem of describing hoarse voice is raised.
