Word association norms for a set of threat/neutral homographs

Abstract

Word associations were collected from 300 subjects to a set of homographs, each with at least one threat-related and one neutral meaning, to determine the relative dominance of the different meanings. Twelve independent judges rated each meaning for threat value and also indicated to which meaning they felt each associate was related. The finished norms include data on 142 threat/neutral homographs in terms of: (1) the threat-rating of each meaning of the stimulus homograph; (2) the results of Scheffé tests to indicate which meanings differ significantly in terms of threat value; and (3) the associates produced in response to each homograph and the number of subjects producing each associate.
