Abstract
A need for a behaviorally specific locus of control instrument led to the development of the FITLOC—multidimensional scales for the measurement of locus of control of reinforcement for physical fitness behaviors. Potential items were administered to 115 subjects together with Levenson's IPC scales, a Weight Locus of Control scale, and a Social Desirability scale. After data analysis, unsatisfactory items were deleted leaving scales consisting of three, four, and four items for the internal, powerful others, and chance scales, respectively. These scales were administered to a second sample to enable evaluation of their reliability and validity. In a third data collection, the FITLOC was administered to a completely new sample together with a physical activity questionnaire. The FITLOC scales appear to represent different independent constructs, and have preliminary evidence for their reliability and validity. Further work is necessary to establish the potential of the FITLOC for physical fitness psychology research.
