By now, our regular readership is well aware that Dr. Thomas Gardner and Dr. John Tiffany have decided to retire as the editors of Current Eye Research. The entire vision research community is indebted to them for their efforts in guiding this journal in its mission of rapid publication of high-quality vision research. As the new co-editors of Current Eye Research, we are committed to continuing the intent of the original and subsequent editors of this journal, as well as exploring new ways for the journal to more effectively serve the vision research community, to constructively respond to the challenges confronting scientific publishing, and to elevate the status of the journal by expanding readership.

Typically, Current Eye Research publishes research articles covering a broad range of topics that define ophthalmic and vision research. The journal has a mission to rapidly publish basic and translational research that has relevance to patients and clinicians. Through serendipity, we have a special occasion in which the seven of the 12 papers in this issue (including the Minireview by Gordon and colleagues) share a common theme of microbial keratitis. We hope that our readers will find this collection to be of particular interest, though it is not our intention to modify the publication date of any manuscript to selectively consolidate papers into specific thematic issues. We welcome submissions from collaborating or related research groups and are willing to try to coordinate joint publications. If similar opportunities to highlight a group of papers within an issue arise, then we will be sure to note this to our readers.

We appreciate the ongoing contributions of the superb editorial board that has generously served this journal. In the coming months we will be moving towards expanding our board membership to ensure that we can provide adequate oversight for the diverse research areas that encompass the scope of this journal. The new publishers of Current Eye Research, Taylor and Francis, are major contributors to biomedical research journalism and have a significant commitment to the vision-related scientific literature with six regular journal publications. We look forward to working together with all of our “sibling” journals to optimally meet the needs of our constituents. We welcome suggestions and input from the entire vision research community as we strive to serve you.
