ABSTRACT

The first species from the United States that can clearly be referred to the European genus Iguanodon is described from the Lakota Formation of South Dakota. Consisting of virtually the entire skull and two vertebrae, I. lakotaensis (sp. nov.) represents the most primitive of Iguanodon species. Presence of Iguanodon from the Barremian (Lower Cretaceous) Lakota Formation confirms the suggestion that there was a close connection between the North American and Eurasian continental blocks during or immediately before this time.
