Pages 175-195 | Published online: 30 Jul 2010

This article is a critical evaluation of modernization and development theories. It focuses on three issues: the ideological basis of modernization and development concepts; the distortions of Western and Nonwestern societies’ histories that underlie various theories; and the political motivations behind the content of modernization and development policies and theories.
