Abstract
Based upon immersion into the work culture of city emergency medical systems, this qualitative study of paramedics and emergency medical technicians identifies seven generic audiences before which emergency health care is provided. Interactions between audience members and paramedics are described. It is hoped that a more conceptually complete understanding of the occupational milieu of paramedics will be provided by this study and that such an understanding will lead to mutually beneficial interactions between paramedics and members of the audiences that are involved in the drama of pre‐hospital emergency medical care. Also, this study is intended as an addition to the growing body of literature on “street work” and can be used as a datum for future comparative research efforts.
