Abstract
Several widely‐used industrial chemicals, including chlorophenols and chlorobenzenes, are precursors of PCDDs and PCDFs which are formed by various reaction mechanisms. In some cases, PCDDs and PCDFs have been recognized as byproducts from the manufacture of these chemicals. Individual chlorophenol and chlorobenzene formulations contain specific congener patterns of PCDDs and PCDFs that agree with the discussed formation mechanisms rather well. The industrial production and use of these chemicals are potential sources of PCDDs and PCDFs in the aquatic environment.
Formation mechanisms of PCDDs and PCDFs from potential industrial precursors are reviewed.
