The volatilization rates of pesticides were determined in a simple laboratory model system. The volatilized pesticides were measured directly by collection in cold traps. From the volatilized amount, the half‐life of the pesticides on the surfaces was calculated. The volatilization rates of the pesticides LINDANE (γ‐1,2,3,4,5,6‐hexachloro‐cyclohexane) and ATRAZINE (2‐chloro‐4‐ethylamino‐6‐isopropylamino‐l,3,5‐triazine) were determined from the surfaces of two different soil types and three different plant species. The half‐lives of the pesticides were strongly dependent on soil type, soil humidity, and soil temperature, or plant species and leaf temperature, resp.
