Long‐term experiments were carried out under natural pond conditions to study the effects of 3,4‐dichloroaniline (DCA) on plankton communities. DCA was kept at concentrations of 50±30 μg/l for 55 days and at 25±15 μg/l for additional 25 days; it had to be applied several times because of its loss (rate 0.06–0.14 d‐1). The most sensitive species was Daphnia longispina; the number of individuals was significantly lower as a consequence of DCA; therefore the threshold concentration for outdoor populations is below 25 μg/l.
