In the neighbourhood of an industrial site some 45% of the residents complained about bad odour, some about eye irritation and nausea.
To identify the origin of the tarlike odour, producing times of a bitumen hot‐mix plant, wind conditions and the occurrence of contaminated air in the residential site were compared. The emissions of the road surfaces producing factory were checked. Two chimneys discharging odorants into the air were identified. Emissions of the two chimneys and contaminated air at the residential site were sampled. The samples were investigated quantitatively and qualitatively with GC/MS. The strongly odorous substance turned out to be dimethyldisulfide. It was emitted form an identified chimney and also occurred in the residential area. The road surface producing company accepted these data as evidence and eliminated the source instantly. The tarlike odour disappeared and the complaints in the residential area declined.
