Abstract

Co‐solute effects of partially‐miscible‐with‐water trichloroethene (TCE) on the solubility of seven chlorobenzenes have been studied. The aqueous concentrations of these chlorobenzenes in water were determined with and without the presence of TCE. It has been found that reliable solubility measurements demand relatively long mixing times and settling times to minimize the effect of colloids. Experimental results indicate that the aqueous concentrations of chlorobenzenes which are liquid at 25°C decrease with increasing concentrations of TCE as long as an organic phase is present; and TCE does not decrease aqueous concentrations of chlorobenzenes which are solid at 25°C unless TCE present as an organic phase dissolves the solid chlorobenzene. These results suggest that solubility of mixtures of hydrophobic organic compounds is a function of the system used.
