Abstract

Parenting for Achievement is a course designed to help parents guide their children toward achievement and self‐confidence. It provides six sessions of parenting instruction with two additional sessions specifically geared to parents of gifted children. It is the first published parenting course that prioritizes the fostering of close home and school relationships. Topics covered include general issues such as praise and criticism; rewards and punishments; dependence and dominance; ogre and dummy games; independent habits; and modeling achievement. The additional modules explore issues related to gifted children such as perfectionism, stress, peer pressure, community enrichment, gifted identification, and acceleration. Trainers may take the course prior to leading their own groups, or they may use the training manual for independent instruction.
