Abstract

Masking techniques are used to evaluate the amount of information contained in light scattering curves from complex particle systems. Mixtures of perfect sphere systems in various proportions, each with exactly known optical constants, can give nonunique light scattering curves that cannot be inverted. However, best fits of the curves from complex systems to theoretical curves for single particle systems can yield “average optical constants” that are directly related to the actual optical constants of the component systems.
