, Ph.D.

Notes

1. Apologies to Tim Leary. While I may have “turned on” and “tuned in,” I most certainly failed to “drop out.” In fact, my LSD experience stimulated me to move in the opposite direction—toward graduate education.

2. Just as I finished this review, a friend sent me a link to a fascinating study by a Mormon historian who makes a very compelling case for the use of plant-based psychedelics by the early members of the Mormon (LDS) church, probably as a result of contact between its founder, Joseph Smith, and local Native Americans: http://www.mormonelixirs.org/Restoration%20and%20the%20Sacr(T8B2).html.
