Assessment and Treatment of Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia in School Age Children

Abstract

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia are major contemporary concerns for high school students, especially females. These syndromes interfere with normal functioning and social development, and can be life-threatening. The school psychologist is in an excellent position to identify individuals who have eating disorders, provide education for students, parents and school personnel, and make treatment referrals before patterns become too entrenched for successful intervention. Definitions, characteristics, symptoms, and treatment approaches for these two eating disorders are discussed, and suggestions for the involvement of the school psychologist are made.
