Self-Reported and Teachers' Rankings of Anxiety Among First-Grade Children

Abstract

This study presents data regarding the relationship between teachers' perceptions of their students' anxiety and the students' rankings of anxiety as determined by two self-report measures. Rank-order correlations between rankings revealed nonsignificant relationships between teachers rankings and children's anxiety rankings on either the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale or the Children's Anxiety Scale. Rankings of scores between the two measures were significant in two classrooms, with a third classroom approaching significance. These results are discussed in terms of using teacher referral versus other screening measures.
