Notes on contributors

John L. Presland

John Presland taught in primary schools for some years before becoming an educational psychologist. He has always been conscious of the contribution educational psychology should make to informing educational practice. Testing is now very unfashionable; it smacks of differentiation, selection and elitism. Yet testing has its uses, as well as its dangers. It may not be a substitute for teachers' judgement, but it can provide a useful comparative or diagnostic perspective on pupils' achievements.
